I’ve been waffling between buying Guitar Hero 3 for my PS2 or for my PS3. I wasn’t really interested in buying any downloadable content, so that wasn’t a deciding factor. For the longest time, I was planning on getting the PS3 versions so that I could use the Les Paul guitar with Rock Band once I purchase that. But as it turns out, Activision shafted us PlayStation users once again (don’t get me started!) by making a guitar that wasn’t compatible. So even though 360 owners can use their GH3 guitar with Rock Band, us PS3 users can’t. So that’s one less reason to buy the PS3 version.
Add to this the fact that I already have Guitar Hero 1, 2, and 80’s for the PS2. So if I buy GH3 with the guitar, I would have two guitars to rock these games with.
That’s what I decided to do. Yesterday I picked up GH3 for the PS2, and last night my friends and I rocked out for some time.
What do I think of the game? It’s Guitar Hero 3 , so if you know any of the previous games, you know this one. All the play mechanics and how to play the game are all the same. The tracklist is good. But I did have some problems and issues.
- When I first started playing, I did terribly, missing most of the notes. So I did the whole calibration thing, and things worked fine thereafter. But I didn’t have to do this calibration thing with GH1, GH2, or GH80’s, so why did I have to do it with GH3? Something’s fishy.
- Practicing a song by playing it slow just doesn’t work. Almost all the notes register as a miss. This is retarded. I could just not understand what was going on, and I never did resolve this problem. (This was done AFTER calibration.) I used this mode just fine in previous GH games.
- Memory card usage is slower. This is basically the same game as before, why does it take noticably longer to save to the memory card?
- There’s co-operative career mode, which is great. But there’s no co-operative Quickplay. Just Face Off, Pro Face Off, and Battle. (I think). This was rather disappointing.
- I got some money and went to buy Dragonforce’s song, but it wasn’t in the list. I know it’s a GH3 buyable song. I hope it shows up in the list after I play more. I hope it wasn’t omitted from the PS2 version.
- My friends complained about a noticable lag difference between the wired guitar and the wireless one.
- All the people in the crowd look identical, and move identically at the same identical time. That looks pretty bad.
So after all that, I have to admit that I was disappointed in my first GH3 experience. I’ll still enjoy the game, but these issues prevent me from giving this game two thumbs up.
So what do I give this game out of ten? I’ll have to go with 7.5. It’s a good game, but all the problems I had really soured it for me. Activision really needs to get their act together, and they need to give us a solution for playing these games on the PS3.

You can’t buy the Dragonforce song…you open it when you beat the game (at least in Easy). That’s the way it worked on my Wii at least.
Thanks for reading, Greg! I’m just trying to get this site off the ground and comments like yours really help.
Yes I finally figured that out yesterday when I beat the game on Medium. Man, medium gets hard near the end there. I can’t imagine beating the song on Hard.
I’ve noticed that sometimes the game doesn’t receive input from the controller. I happens for a couple seconds, and then passes. Does that happen for anyone else?
